Greetings Monster Kids!
And welcome to the new MONSTROVILLE blog site. In the coming months we'll be adding lots more updates on the 5 min stop-motion short, currently in pre-production. In the meantime, please feel free to explore our past, and present development artwork.

These are very exiting time for SWAMP APE STUDIOS. Going from a 2D Flash show, to Stop-Motion is very exiting. We've been getting in contact with some very talented artists who have been working on the Stop-Motion industry for awhile, and are donating their free time to help get the short made, this way we can pitch it to various studios in hopes of getting the feature film picked up.

TOM KENNY AS BARON VON GHASTLY

In addition to voicing the lead role of “SpongeBob” in the Nickelodeon’s hit animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, Tom Kenny is also familiar to Nick viewers as the voices of “Dog” CatDog and Heffer on Rocko’s Modern Life. His additional television voice work includes “Lumpus the Moose” on Camp Lazlow and “Eduardo” on Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. He is also a regular cast member on the animated series Super Robot Monkey Team, My Gym Partner is a Monkey, Handy Manny, Futurama, Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls and as “Happy” on Fox’s animated series Sit Down, Shut Up. His voice talents can also be heard on the new educational series for PBS, “Wordgirl and he also voices the villain Zilius Zoxx on Warner Brothers' upcoming "Green Lantern" animated series, produced by the illustrious Bruce Timm.

Tom’s voice talents can also be heard as various robots in “Transformers-Revenge of the Fallen,” and as Rabbit in the upcoming feature film, “Winnie the Pooh.”

Kenny was a regular cast member of HBO’s critically acclaimed sketch program Mr. Show with Bob and David and appeared as the office loser “Persky” on Just Shoot Me. He has also guest-starred on The Drew Carey Show, Brotherly Love and Unhappily Ever After. Kenny creeped out audiences as the evil “Binky the Clown” in the cult film Shakes the Clown and starred with his wife (Jill Talley) in the Smashing Pumpkins’ award-winning video for their song “Tonight, Tonight.”

In addition to his voice work, Tom has appeared on such television shows as Premiere Blend,Comic Strip Live, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brian, and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

An aficionado of old blues, jazz, country and rockabilly music, Kenny occasionally moonlights with his band, performing songs from his extremely obscure record collection. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Jill, son McKinley and daughter Nora.

JASON MARSDEN AS EDWARD VON GHASTLY

With a career spanning more than 25 years, Jason Marsden has been affectoinately referred to as... “that guy from that show.” The seasoned actor has worked in film and television with the best and the brightest, including Ridley Scott (White Squall), Robert Downey Jr. (Ally McBeal), James Woods (Shark), Billy Crystal (Mr. Saturday Night), Jim Carrey (Fun with Dick and Jane), and countless others. With more than 150 credits to his name, Jason Marsden has defintely made a dent in the entertainment industry.

Originally from Warwick, Rhode Island, Jason and his parents relocated to California when he was 11 years old. After just a few weeks of his new after-school activity—scene study and commercial training—the charismatic Jason was instantly signed by an agency and saturated with auditions for film, television, voice-over, commercials, and more.

After turns on General Hospital, Webster, and Murphy Brown, Jason was cast as Eddie Munster in the revamped Munsters Today, which ran for three seasons in syndication. From there he appeared on Tales from the Crypt, Anything But Love, and Star Trek: The Next Generation before landing his second series regular role as Dash X in the series Eerie, Indiana. His character actor appeal soon caught the attention of Billy Crystal, who cast him as a younger version of himself in the film Mister
Saturday Night.

For the next few years, Jason co-starred in numerous television shows, including Baywatch, Blossom, Deep Space Nine. He starred in two more sit-coms after that. Almost Home with Britney Murphy, and Tom, starring Tom Arnold. He was soon asked to recurr on Full House, as D.J.’s rich boyfriend, Nelson. His "teen-hearthrob" status earned him another recurring gig for two years on the popular TGIF series Boy Meets World. Shortly after, he joined the cast of Step by Step (starring Suzanne Somers and Patrick Duffy) for their final two seasons.

The silver screen soon called to Jason and, at age twenty, he was offered a role appearing opposite Jeff Bridges in White Squall. On a production that spanned eight countries, he shared the screen with contemporaries Scott Wolf, Jeremy Sisto, Ryan Phillippe, and Balthazar Getty. Upon returning to the states, Jason propelled himself into more network television, appearing in episodes of The Jamie Foxx Show, Ally McBeal, Bram and Alice, Even Stevens, Just Shoot Me!, and Shark. It was his unforgettable guest starring role as Kim (the “pocket gay”) on Will & Grace, however, that earned him a place alongside Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Harry Connick, Jr.

Somehow, amongst all of his on-camera work, Jason has also managed to amass over 100 credits behind the mic. He has lent his voice to some of animation’s most beloved characters in cartoon series, feature films, radio programs, and more. Jason has played a wide range of roles—from the main character in the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away to the son of one of Disney’s favorite dogs in A Goofy Movie. At present, he is wrapping the first season of Hasbro’s GI Joe: Renegades for the HUB network, Fairly Odd Parents for Nickelodeon, and The Garfield Show on Cartoon Network. If you're a video game fan, you've probably heard Jason in such epic games as Fallout New Vegas, Knights of the Old Republic, and the title role in Tak and the Power of Juju.

Jason is also a proud member of the Directors Guild of America. Having helmed the season finale of Nickelodeon’s The Journey of Allen Strange, he has subsequently directed numerous music videos as well as several short films. His latest short film The Author: Part of Locker 13 (starring Krista Allen and Rick Hoffman) earned official selection at Palm Springs Shorts Fest, Phoenix Film Festival, Nashville International Film Festival, and continues touring the '10-'11 film festival circuit.

Back in the spotlight once again, Jason has recently appeared in several independent films including High Hopes (with David Faustino and Jason Mewes), Pizza Man (starring Frankie Muniz), as well as the much anticipated Blue Like Jazz, based on the famed novel, which just wrapped filming in Nashville, TN. While working on his current projects, Jason is studying the Charles Conrad Method at the Steve Eastin Studio and enjoying the role he was born to play...loving husband to his wife, Christy and awesome dad to his son, Clark Otis.

ERIC BAUZA AS PROFESSOR LUDVIG VON HELMET

Eric started his career in animation as a character designer, working with a few production studios in Hollywood. It was this introduction to the animation world that eventually led him to a successful career in voiceovers.

In just a few short years, Eric has starred in such Emmy award winning shows as Nickelodeon’s – “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera”, "The Fairly Odd Parents", "Fan Boy and Chum Chum", Adult Swim’s “Superjail”, Warner Bros. Animation’s “The Looney Tunes Show”, and Hasbro's GI JOE: Resolute. Aside from his television credits, Eric has played multiple roles on "The King and Us", a web-series sponsored by Burger King, and was seen on the NFL on FOX pre-game show. Eric recently had a cameo role as "Digger the Nascar Gopher" in the box-office hit "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel".

THE SYNOPSIS:

Don’t let your kids follow the trail of candy through the haunted woods. Past the old Jack Hill Graveyard they’ll find MONSTROVILLE, where all Halloween Candy is made!
Edward Von Ghastly lives in this haunted seaside with his mechanized sidekick, Gear. Together they navigate his home town filled with monster, zombies, witches, ghosts, ghouls, werewolves, and all the things that go bump in the night: Gruesome greasers, headless specters, monsters from outer space, pirates, and mad scientists.

Speaking of mad scientists, Edward’s father is the mad scientist Baron von Ghastly. He and his family reside in Von Ghastly Manor atop the second tallest hill overlooking Monstroville and the root beer sea. They make a creepy brand of candy for Monstroville’s beloved holiday, Halloween. No one, not even the Baron, knows how long Von Ghastly’s have been making "Ghastly Gruesome Goodies" in their factory on Spook Hill, but its a long time. And the candy is the cat’s meow! They’re the bee’s knees (Which is also one of their secret ingredients!). They’re really very good.

But some of the Baron’s experimental confections have been known to come to life and wreak havoc upon the town below! Its up to Edward and Gear to save the day!
One day Edward will be in charge of candy-making at the old factory, but until that time he must protect Monstroville from every manner of seen and unseen menaces (In a town called “Monstroville” there’s bound to be many!) and worse, mediocre candy produced by his family’s most unscrupulous rival, El Phantasmo and his wife Satana. Their ho-hum candy making facility is located in an old abandoned amusement island park and they vow to crush his number one candy making rivals, the Von Ghastly family!

Welcome to Monstroville!

Monstroville is a Flash animated cartoon for kids of all ages. We're currently working on the short pilot that will serve to help pitch a Monstroville as a series. If you dig Mad Monster Party, & The Nightmare Before Christmas, than you'll want to see Monstroville get made!

This indie production is a labor of love, and the entire cast and crew is donating their time, and talents so that the series can see the light of day.

A few minutes ago Anonymous commented on the previous post about the title card.
If you're following the blog, you can see we're in full swing on the production of the short. I've met with some studio Executives, and folks are interested, but producing this project takes time. I thank everyone past and present for all their hard work.

Without everyones efforts none of this is possible. I know it's going to get picked up, and when it does, it's going blow everyone away!

Here's what he or she had to say....

That a gorgeous card, but it begs the question... why? You don't even have a completed episode to follow this.

I've been biting my tongue on this for awhile now, and enough is enough. I've watched this blog blossom over the last few years with fantastic artwork from some the industry's top talents. Just top notch work....but ultimately it goes nowhere. Why do so much development, and never break ground on an episode?? You don't 80 characters to figure out a 7 character pilot. It's like building a car over and over, and never actually leaving the driveway.

To be blunt, I think the fault lies with you, O'Neal. You tout around the names and reputations of very hard working artists, to entice people to do free work for you. Not because you want to create something real, but because you're that bratty little kid in candy store that wants gumballs...no jawbreakers....no lollipops..no licorice...etc.

These artists are nice enough to contribute what little free time they have, for a project that will never see the light of day. Let's call it what it is, outright abuse of people and their talents. You're taking advantage O'neal, and it's wrong.

I'm throwing down the gauntlet, O'Neal. Your visual development team have done their work, now it's your turn. Hold up your end of the bargain and go pound the pavement, get some meetings, kiss some asses.....whatever it takes to get this thing made.Otherwise, in the end...you're just another wanna-be. big mouth, vampire executive that took advantage of hard working artists...and what's worse, gave the artists nothing in return.

Candy Corn Monster

Awhile back character designer/concept artist Stef Choi (Coraline, Powerpuff Girls) was gracious enough to jump on board the production for a brief time. I asked her to design our giant Candy Corn Monster that battles Mech Gear, and here are a few amazing concept designs that she came up with!

After that, our Art Director Jeremiah took Stef's original designs, and tweaked them since the story called for the monster to be a bit more on nightmarish side.

Hey guys. So for a good long while now I've been trying to find some extra time to crank out a rough color line up of the Ghastlys...which has been a bit trickier to do schedule-wise than I'd thought, but after some finagling and jostling of this and that, here's where I ended up. Heya Gang. So here's the rough for the bg style guide. Nothing too fantastic or anything, but I'm hoping that it'll give us enough info to be moderately well informed as to the layout and design direction of the world. Rough color key soon to come and then it's off to be painted by the super talented Drake Brodahl!!! Needless to say, we're all chompin' at the bit to see the painting awesomeness that he's gonna crank out.... man's it's gonna be cool. Hey monster kids!
Pre-production on the Monstroville trailer has been moving along smoothly. Carolyn and I just wrapped up the 2nd draft of the script, and passed it along to Tom Kenny so that he can work his magic. Also our animation team is working on Baron tests, plus character's and backgrounds are being designed.

Here's the final Von Ghastly's line-up that Jeremiah finished, and is currently working on their color's.
And as an extra bone-shivering bonus, introducing Mech Gear (portrayed by Clancy Brown) standing next to his alter-ego Gear, in all of his doom bot of destruction glory!

Hey monster kids!
Just some quick news. Things are moving ahead at a rapid pace with Monstroville. Lots of fun animation tests, and designs are in the works, but the biggest news of all is that recently Carolyn got her fellow SpongeBob SquarePants pals, Tom Kenny (aka SpongeBob), and Clancy Brown (Mr. Crabs), to join our amazing cast! Tom will be portraying our mad candy-maker Baron Von Ghastly, and Clancy will be the Von Ghastly's ex-military family robot Gear.

Monstroville The Movie!

Hey gruesome ghoulies!
So after a few months of pitching Monstroville as a series around town to various studios including; Cartoon Network, Nick and Disney, everyone decided to pass even though it did
get a pretty good response...guess their just not ready for something with a old school retro 50's monster vibe!

Regardless, I'm now directing and co-producing Monstroville into a flash feature film with my good friend voice actress Carolyn Lawrence (Nick's SpongeBob Squarepants & Jimmy Neutron) who originally recorded the voice of Elsa Von Ghastly for the pitch. Also joining the project are some very talented folks who helped out originally, voice actors Tara Strong (CN's Powerpuff Girls & Ben 10) returning as Edward Von Ghastly plus 2 more characters, and Chris Hardwick (Nick's The X's & Back to the Barnyard) as El Phantasmo, and a few new edition's including; my good pal Miah Alcorn (El Tigre) as the Lead Character Designer/Art Director, Dee Chavez (El Tigre) Background Painter/Texture Artist, and Kristofer Boban (Yo Gabba Gabba!) as the Animation Director.
